VBScript

VBScript (short for Visual Basic Scripting Edition) is an Active Scripting language interpreted via Microsoft's Windows Script Host. The language's syntax reflects its pedigree as a variation of Microsoft's Visual Basic programming language. It initially gained support from Windows administrators seeking an automation tool more powerful than the batch language first developed in the late 1970s.

Microsoft attempted to address some of these shortcomings by introducing the Windows Script Host in 1998 with Windows 98. The Windows Script Host was a new scripting layer which could implement a variety of scripting languages. However, the Script Host had its own deficiencies. It was not integrated with the shell, its documentation was not very accessible, and it quickly gained a reputation as a system vulnerability after several high-profile computer viruses exploited substantial weaknesses in its security provisions.

Active Scripting

Active Scripting (formerly known as ActiveX Scripting) is the technology used in Windows to implement component-based scripting support. It is based on COM (more precisely, OLE Automation) and allows installation of additional scripting engines in the form of COM modules.

JScript

JScript JScript is a computer programming language created by Microsoft and is a superset of the ECMAScript programming language. JScript is implemented as a Windows Script engine. This means that it can be "plugged in" to any application that supports Windows Script, such as Internet Explorer, Active Server Pages, and Windows Script Host. It also means that any application supporting Windows Script can use multiple languages - JScript, VBScript, Perl, and others. JScript was first supported in Internet Explorer browser 3.0 released in August 1996. As with any other Active Scripting engine, it is available through Internet Explorer, Windows Script Host, and Active Server Pages. The typical file extension of JScript source code files is .js.

about JScript

The orignal JScript is an Active Scripting engine. Like other Active Scripting languages, it is built on the COM/OLE Automation platform and provides scripting capabilities to host applications. This is the version used when hosting JScript inside a Web page displayed by Internet Explorer, in an HTML application, in classic ASP, in Windows Script Host scripts and several other Automation environments. JScript is sometimes referred to as "classic JScript" or "Active Scripting JScript" to differentiate it from newer .NET-based versions.

Managed JScript

Managed JScript is an implementation of JScript for the Dynamic Language Runtime
